Maurice Ravel’s Boléro is a milestone in music and dance history and one of the most well-known French works in the world. When Ravel was about to start a four-month concert tour through the United States and Canada, Ida Rubinstein, his friend and patron, asked him to write a “ballet with a Spanish character”. Sensitive to the idea of dance, Ravel chose the bolero, a traditional Andalusian dance. And so, the work was born.
