On 9 and 10 December, the World Press Freedom Conference took place in digital form. Completely online via an interactive platform with live streams from the World Forum The Hague. WPFC 2020 has been officially nominated for a Golden Giraffe event award!
The theme of WPFC 2020 was “Journalism without Fear or Favour,” a phrase coined by Adolph S. Ochs, founder of the New York Times. We must continue to stand up for a free, safe and independent media and protect journalism from new and existing forms of unwanted control, pressure and influence. At a time when the independence, safety and freedom of the media are under attack in so many countries, and with the Covid-19 pandemic underscoring the importance of a well-functioning media, standing up for press freedom is more relevant than ever.
More than 7.000 people attended the conference and several new initiatives were launched during WPFC 2020 to protect journalists worldwide.
